After about 2 years of planting fig trees, I have collected up to 20 varieties of fig trees in my house compound.  We have sold some of the small fig trees which we did air layered from our existing trees.  

We have not been able to sale our figs just yet as the figs that we harvested are just about enough for our own consumption probably because we let them grow organic way, we only fertilise our trees once in a while with organic fertiliser, no green house nor spraying chemical.  We have also lost many of our beautiful half ripen figs to the birds all the time, many figs stop growing half way through and countless of them got spoiled by fruits intruders.

We always get very excited when we see our figs fully ripen on the trees and make it to our table.  This week alone we are able to pluck up to 10 different sizes and varieties of figs, we gave away 3 to my sister in law who is trying to grow figs in pots as well.

A morning tour of my fig plants

Woke up slightly early this morning, able to steal sometime to check on our fig plants before going to work. In fact, I am pretty excited to see so many fruits on the trees. Honestly, not all the fruits turn out to be good, we had thrown away some of the fruits because they turned bad prematurely on the tree due to many factors, too much rain, white flies, and other pesticides are all detrimental to growing fig trees. We hope to harvest 2 of the fruits from Louisiana University Gold variety hopefully by this evening, you will see in my video below that they are looking good on the tree but have yet to taste them to give an honest recommendation on this variety.

After 10 months into planting fig trees, we have experienced many ups and downs like many other endeavors. Trees too need our loving tender care. For the last few weeks, our fig trees have started fruiting. Under ideal conditions, a fig takes more or less 2 months to ripen. Let me give you a tour around our home grown fig trees which are bearing fruits.

Different varieties has its own distinct texture and taste, that's why fig collectors are cultivating many different types of varieties and their prices are also varies.  Will update again when they are ripen.

Harvesting our Taiwan Golden Fig

After into 8 months of planting our first fig tree since May 2016 (my earlier post), we finally got to harvest some decent size figs from our Taiwan Golden Fig (TGF) tree. TGF is not an expensive variety among all of the fig trees, but it is a very popular variety for the fig planters. The size of the fig is medium and the taste is reasonably good. We are so happy to "harvest" the figs after weeks of waiting for them to ripe, one after another. By the way, it only produced 4 fruits this time round. Let's come see our little "harvest".

We always cut the fig into 4 equal pieces so that everyone of us in the house have a share of it, even for the smallest tiny fig, because each variety has got its distinct texture and taste.

Planting from cuttings and seeds - Fig & Avocado

We have been busy doing some fig planting project at our home for the past one month.  I ordered some hybrid fig tree cuttings from the local planter, put them in the soil and after 2 weeks or so of tender nurturing care, the cuttings have produced new shoots coming out like these..

 

fast forward yesterday, they have grown a bit more like the photo below.  Since their roots are still not stable yet, it is not advisable to place them outdoor.  Oh yes, the little one at the bottom right is a cutting from Spain, Don Juan, we are so glad to see its new shoots.

 

I ordered yet another batch of cuttings from the same planter last week.  They are now in the "incubator" waiting for the new roots and shoots to come out.  Hopefully all our cuttings will live.

 

 Being ambitious, I am also trying to grow avocado tree from seeds after we ate the fruits.  So far no sign of root or shoot after 1 week...

 

Fresh and dried fig fruits

We tasted a few more varieties of fresh fig fruits lately from a local farm.  I was trying to get the names of these figs but she has forgotten which trees she plucked them from.  Vividly she could remember one of them is TGF (Taiwan Golden Fig).  The smallest one is cute and sweet.

During puasa month and with Ramadan approaching, there are aplenty of dried figs for sale in the supermarket.  Being first time buying dried figs, I chose the brand that I heard regularly on the radio, Yusuf Taiyoob. 

 

We have counted, there are 38 pieces of dried figs compactly packed in this round plastic container.  I really love the texture of these dried figs, not overly sweet.  I can have 4-5 pieces in a day as snack.  Although my girls much prefer the fresh ones but they do not mind having one or two the dried ones while waiting for our home grown fig trees to bear fruits in 3-4 months time..hopefully earlier. 

Our first Fig Tree - Taiwan Golden Fig (TGF)

We bought our first Fig tree from the tamu place last weekend.  I first heard about fig trees from my colleague last year whom is a facebook fan of one of the local fig farm.  She told me that both the fig seedlings and fruits are expensive but the demand is good despite of the price.

Fig is a nutritious fruit contains minerals, vitamins and fiber, vitamin A, B1, B2, Calcium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, sodium, potassium & chlorine.  It is good to control and lower blood sugar level.  With that reason, we try to plant fig tree at home.  We bought a small plant in a poly bag and transplanted it to a pot with the soil mixture recommended by the nursery.

We also bought a packet of 6 pieces figs fruit (RM16.90 for 160gm) from the local mini market.  Marking our first time trying fresh fig fruits.
