Big Fish Meals

Fish is my first choice when comes to having dishes, I will only opt it out when the shops that we dine in are overpriced for their fish dishes.

My better half saw a youtube introduction of a newly opened fish shop named "大鱼 Big Fish " in the city.  We went to check it out after church last Sunday.

It is located just opposite the new railway terminal at Aeropod Commerical Centre.  After checking on the menu, my daughters prefer to order other stuff instead of the centre piece big bowl fish soup.  I was having bad flu and cough that day (still at the time of writing this post), I ordered a bowl of fish porridge to soothe my throat.   Let us bring you along to the Big Fish Restaurant in KK, there is no MSG in their ingredient.

Sunday Rest Day, Family Day

As a full time working mum, Saturdays & Sundays are very precious days for me.  I still wake up early on Saturdays as it is a school days for my girls (except it's public holiday or school holidays).  We wake up slightly later on Sundays to church.

It is family bonding time for me on these 2 days.  We can have breakfast together without having to rush to school or work, we can take our time to explore new places to have our meals, shopping and relax at home (I can take a nap whenever I want).

We tried out the Sandakan famous bouncy noodles after church this morning at Damai.

My daughters ordered the Sandakan bouncy noodles.  I still stick to my all time favourite meehoon soup.

I did try a spoonful of the bouncy noodles but I did not like it.  It is too tough for me to chew, I am happy with the bowl of meehoon soup.  We also ordered a bowl of dumplings soup with pork and century egg fillings.  My better half gave the dumplings a thumbs up.
The total bill is RM40.10 for 2 bowls of Sandakan bouncing noodles with soup, 1 bowl of mixed meehoon soup, I bowl of dumplings soup, 2 iced Milo, 1 coffee kahwin & 1 glass of Chinese Tea ping. These breakfast has kept us full till afternoon tea at 4pm.

Pizza Hut Locked Pocket Pizza meal set

We decided to dine out tonite but what to eat and where?  These are the usual questions that we have each time we decide to eat out.  Since many years ago, our girls' opinions of what they would like to eat have become our basis of considerations.

They finally decided to go to Pizza Hut for the pasta, we haven't been there for quiet a while.

There is a new pizza and pie on the menu, thus we ordered 1 each to try.
 The locked pocket pizza set
 with minced chicken fillings
The side of the dough are sliced and folded to hold the minced chicken resembling a pocket, similar sort of toppings.

the appetizer came with the pizza set is chicken vegetable roll (simply frozen food)

A bowl of pie, very excited to dig in but very disappointed that what we found covered under the mashed potatoes and cheese slice are sausages and slices of button mushrooms and tomato puree.  Frozen food again.

Pasta is what my girls are coming to Pizza Hut for.  They ordered a plate of each of this spaghetti, the serving portion is satisfying.

Wedding Anniversary Dinner

This month this year, we are into 16 years of marriage, a lot of ups and downs, happiness and disappointments, arguments and forgiveness. We are blessed with 2 precious daughters with our Lord God in the centre of family, there is nothing else I could ask except for His continuous Blessings for Good health, lots of Love, happiness and safety for all of us in our family.

Celebration must have good food. With 2 additional voices and opinions, we came to a consensus to have our anniversary dinner at Grill'z Kitchen. This is one of the only few restaurants that served pork in their menus.

If you happen to be in KK, you could try Grill'z Kitchen at :

Upperstar Restaurant

Upperstar is a very successful chain restaurant in Sabah. Credits are given to its reasonable price, good food and cosy dinner environment. Just a few weeks ago, we went to its Damai branch restaurant just after it is opened for business at 10.30am. We had our family Christmas party meeting there. Gathering is not complete without food, we went there empty stomach after Sunday morning mass from church.

I ordered a cup of coffee, they serve our local Fatt Choi Tenom coffee (I like the idea of them supporting local produce).
Fatt Choi coffee sachet is very thick and kaw, I can make a pot of coffee instead of a mug using one sachet at home.
My cheesy girls ordered lasagne and
spaghetti carbonara for breakfast in the morning
on the side we ordered the mixed sandwiches - Tuna and Egg sandwiches
and curry buffs
On the meeting table

We were sitting at the open air, this little fella came around, not asking for food, simply hanging around.  My girls always wanted to have cat at home, they are still waiting for my green light to have a cat.
I might adopt a cat to scare away the rats around the house since our dogs could not do their job.  Still considering.

Dumplings Soup 皮蛋饺子青菜汤

My generous neighbour gave us a pack of 10 pieces frozen dumplings that she bought from her visit to Sandakan.  It is the best dumplings that we have had so far.  The fillings is compact with pork, prawn, century egg 皮蛋. It is super delicious. We only had this soup for dinner last night.

Dining at Palace Hotel Kota Kinabalu

After fetching my girls from school, we chose to have lunch at Palace Hotel slightly an hour before the auction session started. As an assistant to the auctioneer, I can not be late, it would be convenientto dine at the same hotel where the function is.

my girl's spaghetti bolognese came first.  The sauce looks very dry, I thought of sharing some with my girl but the portion is a bit small, she shared some with her little sister whose fish & chips came much later.  The taste must be alright since she did not complain about the sauce being too dry.

My set lunch came with hot coffee.  They serve me the coffee first, by the time I finished my meal, the coffee is no longer hot..I prefer them to serve the coffee last.  Since we were a bit rush, I just accepted it when it's served.

Followed by salad and a bowl of mushroom soup
I chose the Tauhu (beancurd) hot pot with rice as main meal.  Can be tastier I must say, and too plain for my liking, I can only taste the soy sauce.

The fish & chips came last. The serving was alright.
My girls ordered a glass of Chinese Tea ice each, the one at the top right, it's the most expensive glass of Chinese Tea Ice I have ever seen, RM11 each.  The bill came with a total amount which was higher than expected, I looked at the breakdown of the bill and realised the charges of RM22++ for the Chinese Tea Ice, the cashier told me that they have to charge according to the price of other beverage because there is no item for Chinese Tea Ping stated in their menu.  I complained to the F&B senior that it is very unreasonable to charge a plain tea ice for that kind of price.  He then ordered the cashier to cancel the charges from my bill.  I appreciate it very much.

Weekends Eats

Time just fly by during weekends.  We choose to stay home for breakfast when our girls do not have their Sunday school classes, our breakfast will become a brunch because we usually wake up late :D

last weekend, I cooked most of the meals at home which kept me all busy in the kitchen.  There seem are actually so many things to do around the house on weekends which I do not have the chance to do on working days,  Not long after our late breakfast, the clock telling me that it's time for lunch and dinner.
So far this macaroni mushroom is a big favourite for my girls.  The above serving with coffee is my brunch

I am not a good cook, thus here come our simple lunch
Crunchy french beans with minced pork is the only main dish

Don't worry, we had Polo Char Sau Pau and plain Char Sau pau for afternoon tea bought from the famous local kopitiam 333 at Lintan.  The Polo Char Sau Pau is RM3.00 per piece, the shop owner is a good sales lady she convinced me to buy 2 to try it out, combination of sweet and savory,

I still prefer the normal plain char sau pau.

Here come our dinner, when my turn to cook, I will serve more vegetable and keep reminding my girls to eat them.  "Eat more vegetable, blah blah blah...""
Just when we had finished our dinner, BIL and friend brought 3 big packets of mamak mee. Look delicious right?  Yes, I had mamak mee for supper, spicy but tasty with added calamansi juice.

中發白茶樓 Jong fa Pai Seafood fish soup noodles

Fish meehoon soup is my all time favourite.  There are many kopitiams serving good seafood and fish soup in Kota Kinabalu.  I am very particular in the seafood soup base, I would judge base on the first sip of the soup.

I had a long weekend last week.  I took leave off on last Friday to help my better half on his property auction sale, before the auction session, we decided to revisit Tawau Jong Fa Pai kopitiam at their pavilion Bundusan branch.  We noticed that the prices have increased as compared to our last visit.  We know who to blame.
One would guess the owner(s) of this kopitiam must be mahjong kaki for them to name their shop as 中發白.  I will definitely bring my mum here next time for she is a veteran mahjong player not to play mahjong but enjoy the tasty fish soup.

This is my order, Fresh Fish Meehoon soup (without milk), my better half ordered the konlou mee.  They specialise in Fish Head Noodles both with and without milk as well as milk prawn ball.
They have got 3 branches : Market Place 88, Pavilion Bundusan & Taipan Inanam.   It is one of the famous tourists eating kopitiams in KK. (www.jongfapai.com.my)

Meals at Sugar Bun

It's been ages since we last dined at Sugar Bun.  The whole fish set meal is the one attracted my better half to try its meals again.  I could hardly find serving of the whole fish like this in other restaurants.
I opted for something spicy this time, I think is the asam fish set meal.  My kids chose the soupy rice and fried chicken set meals. The soupy rice came pretty late because the kitchen has forgotten our order, my kid went straight to her meal before I even have the chance to take a photo.
Overall we are happy with our meals there..the absence minded kitchen staff is a set back.
